Gannett: Tiberi earns seventh term in U.S. House: The Marion Star, November 6, 2012

By Russ Zimmer

Congressman Pat Tiberi, R-Columbus, has defeated Democratic challenger Jim Reese to return for a seventh time to Ohio’s District 12 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to projections by the Associated Press.

As of 11:30 p.m., the incumbent Tiberi was leading Reese 63 percent to 37 percent with 337,934votes counted.

“I appreciate the overwhelming support I received from voters today and I look forward to serving the new 12th district with the same enthusiasm that I always have,” Tiberi said in a statement released by his campaign.

He said constituents have been strident on two issues: job creation and deficit reduction.

“I will continue to fight to reform our tax code, reduce burdensome regulations, cut spending and decrease our deficits; all of which will put us on the road to a stronger economy,” Tiberi said.

Tiberi carried 71 percent of the vote in Marion County, 58 percent of the vote in Muskingum County and was leading with 56 percent of the vote in Richland County (65 of 85 precincts reported), and 66 percent of the vote in Licking County (precinct count unknown).

Tiberi, 49, raised $3.2 million, 60 percent from political action committees, since the beginning of 2011. He enjoyed a significant fundraising advantage over Reese, a 34-year-old attorney from Gahanna, who collected less than $21,000 in contributions.

House members serve a two-year term and are paid an annual salary of $174,000, though that could increase by 1.1 percent in 2013.

The District 12 Tiberi will be representing is much changed, thanks to decennial redistricting. By subtracting much of it’s share of Franklin County, the district now has a larger geographic footprint that extends east to Zanesville in Muskingum County and north to include Mansfield in Richland County. Parts or all of Licking, Delaware, Marion and Morrow counties are also in the new District 12.

Tiberi is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, as well as the chairman of that group’s Subcommittee on Social Security. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives for seven years before winning his seat in Congress 12 years ago.

In 2010, Tiberi defeated Democrat Paula Brooks 56 percent to 41 percent, with Libertarian candidate Travis Brooks taking 3 percent of the vote.
