Rep. Pat Tiberi is introducing a House version of Sen. Rob Portman’s bill aimed at stopping the spread of synthetic drugs.
Tiberi, R-Genoa Township, and Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., introduced a bill today that would make it more difficult for drugs such as fentanyl and carfentanil from being shipped into the United States through the U.S. postal system. The post office, unlike UPS and FedEx, does not require advance electronic customs data for items being shipped into the United States. And because of the sheer volume of mail, U.S. Customs and Border Protection can’t scan the packages and stop them from being sent to the U.S.
Tiberi’s bill – like Portman’s - would require shipments from foreign countries through our postal system to provide electronic advance data - such as who and where it is coming from, who it’s going to, where it is going, and what’s in it - before they cross our borders and enter the United States.
Portman, R-Ohio, introduced his bill earlier this month.
