The improved use of technology by Medicare and other federal health programs will be a major focus of the next session, Rep. Pat Tiberi, chairman of the Ways and Means health subcommittee, told reporters after today’s hearing on the topic.
“Innovation is occurring in the private sector, and government is trying to catch up,” said the Ohio Republican, adding that his goal is to get Medicare to expand its adoption of and payment for new technologies while improving regulation.
The committee’s work is broader than just Medicare reimbursement of telemedicine or new technology add-on payments, he said.
“CMS doesn’t believe it has the statutory authority to approve a new technology,” Tiberi said. “They believe the statute is still stuck in the 1980s.”
Members of the committee questioned four panelists on telemedicine payments, the meaningful use program, the lack of interoperability and technical fixes to Medicare fraud.
