Tiberi requests hunt for fraud, waste
NEWARK -- If waste exists in the Medicare and Medicaid systems, Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Columbus, said there should be no delay in fixing the problems.
Tiberi sent letters to the chairmen of the Oversight and Government Reform and Ways and Means committees Friday, asking them to begin hearings to look for waste, fraud and abuse.
"Convening hearings in your respective committees would show our commitment to fulfilling the promise of finding these savings," Tiberi wrote in the letter.
"It would serve as a tangible starting point for turning claims about cutting waste fraud and abuse in Medicare into realities, and help explain to the American people in an open and honest way how, exactly, we plan to follow through on the task," he wrote.
Throughout the health care debate, President Barack Obama has said he would pay for reform in part by eliminating $300 billion of waste, Tiberi said, and last week House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested more than $500 billion could be saved.
"If there is hundreds of billions of dollars of waste, fraud and abuse, where is it?" Tiberi spokeswoman Breann González said.
González said Tiberi does not think health-care reform needs to be delayed until the waste is identified but instead envisions hearings and reform taking place simultaneously
